DESPITE a 71-69 defeat in Westminster on Saturday, Mansfield Giants' men bounced back on Sunday to win 101-82 in spectacular fashion at second-placed Brixton and secure their end-of-season play-offs spot.
Giants' head coach Dan Richards said "We showed great character to bounce back from losing at Westminster.

"As a minimum we wanted to win at least one this weekend. We have done that and kept ourselves in pole position for third place, which will be a great achievement and give us confidence going into the play-offs."

Giants complete the league campaign away at Plymouth Raiders this Saturday before returning to Mansfield for the first round of the play-offs the following week.

It is always nice when you have lost to have the chance to rebound with a victory straight away, but Giants maybe would not have chosen the league's second best team who had not lost on their home court all season.

Brixton are the league's second highest scorers and Mansfield are not far behind them on points per game averages. So it was apparent from early on that this would not be as low a scoring game as the previous night.

Mansfield showed no signs of letting the previous evening's loss get to them as they played with a lot greater fluidity and Brixton could not handle Eric Milambo, who caused them no end of problems in the first period scoring 11 points.

At the end of the first period the scores were tied at 25 each.
Giants got off to a flier in the second quarter to earn an eight-point lead before Karolis Petkus and Mansfield old boy Tom Adorian fought back to tie the scores at 33 apiece.

Both teams proceeded to trade baskets, but it was the visitors who held a slender one point lead going into the half time break.

Once more it was Mansfield who took the early initiative in the third quarter, but Adorian was proving nearly unstoppable for the Topcats, scoring 13 points to keep the home side in the contest.

Passmore was brought into the game to combat the effectiveness of Adorian and he kept the big man to only four more points for the remainder of the contest as Giants led 71-68.

There was an increasing number of fouls called early in the fourth which meant both teams were repeatedly going to the free throw line, but each team kept their composure to convert a combined 14 consecutive efforts.

Mansfield then clicked. With the scores finely poised at 79-76 to the Giants they turned on the afterburners to pull out an unassailable 98-78 lead.

To keep a team as good as Brixton to only two points in over five minutes of play took a gargantuan effort from the Giants.

The last couple of minutes were predominantly played out from the free throw line and two Passmore free throws took the score past 100 for a jubilant Mansfield.

The previous day's opponents Westminster Warriors had looked a force prior to Christmas before a disastrous run of results saw them fall from title challengers to sixth place.

Mansfield, conversely, had appeared to find some form and were surely confident of extending their winning run, especially as the hosts were minus starting point guard and head coach Junior Williams through suspension.

If anything, Mansfield shaded the first quarter before the dangerous Henry Wilkins scored three three-pointers in the last 90 seconds to give the home side a 21-18 lead at the first break.

The Giants cranked up the defence in the second period but Westminster were not going to go down without a fight and seemed the hungrier team as Giants took the quarter by five points for a two-point lead.

The visitors started the brighter in the second half before Warriors then went on to produce their biggest scoring run of the game, producing 10 points without reply to open up a five point lead of their own.

Mansfield quickly levelled the scores going into the fourth quarter at 51-51.

As free flowing as the first five minutes of the quarter were, the last five were to be the total opposite as, remarkably, neither team converted a field goal. Mansfield had establish a four-point lead with over three minutes remaining, but went on to score only one more point for the rest of the game.

The officials became more influential as first they called the Mansfield bench for a technical foul as they remonstrated against a decision that didn't go their way.

Richards was then called for an unsportsman foul for an alleged elbow on the next Giants attack and the free throws began to mount for Westminster. Ciesla was then fouled attacking the basket, but could only convert one of two free throws to cut the lead to one.

Good defence from the Giants meant they stopped the Warriors from scoring and gave themselves a shot of winning the game with less than 10 seconds remaining.

Richards got a reasonable look on the play that was drawn up but the ball rimmed out and as time expired the Giants fouled Bulambwe who split a pair of free throws to seal victory.

It was mission accomplished for Mansfield as they gained the 103-88 win they needed over Plymouth to secure third place in their inaugural season in the England Basketball League Division Two.

The final margin of victory was 15 points but from reasonably early in the second quarter the result was never really in doubt.

The season now moves into its final thrilling play-off phase with the top teams vying to be champions in three weekstime in Manchester.

Third place means that the Giants now take on dangerous sixth-placed Medway Park Crusaders from Kent at home this coming Saturday.
Medway are a team that Mansfield have triumphed against on both occasions in the league this season, but both encounters have been close fought single margin victories.

Plymouth gave a good account of themselves in the first period and two three-pointers from Sean Porter and one from Adam Hatchell saw the Raiders grab the early initiative at 17-12.

An 11-0 run from Mansfield, initiated by Mathew Martin's first three- pointer of the night, saw the Giants wrestle back a lead they would not relinquish for the rest of the match, though at the end of the quarter that lead was only a slender two points.

The Raiders could only manage six points in the first seven minutes of the second quarter in which time the Giants had put on 17 of their own to lead by 13 points.

Martin and Dan Watts were doing most of the damage between them, combining for 12 of those 17 points, as Plymouth struggled to cope with the inside/outside game of the Giants pair.

Mansfield switched off a little in the final three minutes and Plymouth scored 11 points to trim the lead back to single figures, going into the half trailing 51-42.

After the restart it was the Giants again who found most freedom to score as all five starters added points early in the period.

The only reply from Plymouth was once more three three-pointers from Porter and Hatchell in the first six minutes.

The teams then traded baskets for a couple of minutes before Mansfield scored the last seven points of the quarter to take an 18-point lead into the final break.

That lead was stretched to 24 by the second minute of quarter four as Michal Ciesla, who had been forced to sit for long periods with four fouls, hitting his second three pointer of the game.

Plymouth refused to lie down and captain Matt Peard scored 12 of his team-high 20 points in the final period.

With just over two minutes remaining the lead was trimmed to 12 points before Watts and then Martin connected from downtown.

It was Martin's fourth three-pointer of the night and it took Mansfield past the 100 point mark for the fourth time in five games.

In the end the result was a 15 point win at 103-88 and Mansfield ended the regular season with a record of 14 wins and six losses.

Giants scorers: Martin 24 (plus 9 rebounds), Ciesla 20, Kelly 17, Richards 16, Watts 15 (plus 8 rebounds and 7 assists), Milambo 9, Hussain 2.

Certainly before the season the Giants would have taken the offer of a third place finish and a cup semi-final appearance in what is a fiercely competitive division.

A club spokesman said: "We are proud of our achievement in finishing third this season.

"What is important is that we continue to improve as we move into the play-offs.

'It all means nothing, though, if we cannot replicate our form in the play-offs.

"Medway are dangerous opponents. In Canadian Brad Smith they have the league's leading scorer and second leading rebounder and he will be a tough match up for anybody.

"They have a number of other dangerous players and we will need to be at the top of our game to get the win.

"I would urge our fans to come down this Saturday to support your team and we will guarantee you a great game of basketball and also a fantastic nights entertainment."

Tip off for the first round of the playoffs is 6pm this Saturday at Oak Tree Leisure Centre and once more you can gain reduced priced admission by taking down a copy of this week's Chad newspaper.

Giants book a semi-finals spot

Mansfield Giants bounced back from a four point half-time deficit to book a place in the England Basketball League Division Two play-off semi-finals with an 84-67 win over visiting Medway Park Crusaders.
While the final score looked comfortable, the majority of the match did not play out as smoothly as the Giants would have wished.

Medway finished the regular season in sixth place but their form since Christmas has been one of the hottest in the league.

It was the visitors who got off to the better start, taking a 9-4 lead in a low-scoring first five minutes as both teams struggled to find any kind of rhythm offensively.

The Giants did manage to bounce back to produce a 13-2 run to end the quarter, largely on the back of Dave Passmore and Matt Martin, who came off the bench to score the Giants' last 11 and take them into a 17-11 quarter lead.

Crusaders sharpshooter James Harris came to life in the second period hitting seven points early in the period and actually gave his side a 20-19 lead.

Giants' versatile forward Dan Watts decided it was about time that he got into the action by replying with seven of the next nine points for the home side as the lead swayed from one team to another no less than five times.

Again Harris displayed his class as he held his nerve to sink five consecutive free throws and move himself onto 14 points in the quarter.

At the other end the Giants were struggling to hit their own free shots and missed four out of their last five attempts to leave themselves facing a four point half-time deficit with the scores 34-32.

There must have been a hint of disappointment within the Giants camp at half-time as, despite keeping the league's leading scorer Brad Smith to 10 points in the half, they failed to take advantage of their superior height advantage.

Eric Milambo, who had a quiet first half, took it upon himself to take the game to Medway at the start of the second half, scoring seven early points and his three-point basket after three minutes re-established a one point lead for the Giants.

Medway dangerman Smith was sent to the bench with his third foul of the game soon after and the Giants smelt blood.

They went on a 10-2 run over four minutes as Ceisla, Passmore and Martin found the extra room under the basket to their liking and opened up a seven point lead for the home side. Mansfield held onto that lead until the end of the quarter which finished 58-51.

Giants maintained their defensive intensity at the beginning of the final quarter and only Smith, who had returned near the end of quarter three, found the basket in the first three minutes.

His first three-point connection of the evening did narrow the gap to six briefly before Martin ended any hopes that lingered in the Crusaders' minds.

He hit 14 of the first 17 Giants points as he caught fire in spectacular fashion. It had taken the Giants into a 14 point lead with little over two minutes remaining.

Medway were being forced into trying to score three-pointers to trim the gap quickly but only Smith found the net as the Giants held their nerve.

Smith did end up scoring a joint game high 29 points in a valiant losing effort, but they came on 30 attempts. In contrast Martin only took 18 shots for his 29 points and he connected with 12.

The final score was 84-67 but had the Giants not missed eight free throws in the final quarter, and 14 of 28 in the game, their winning margin could have been larger.

Giants scorers: Martin 29 (plus 8 rebounds), Watts 13 (plus 13 rebounds), Passmore 11, Milambo 9, Elland 7, Ciesla 7, Kelly 4, Richards 4.

Next step for the Giants is a semi-final shot against seventh-placed Team Northumbria in Newcastle on Saturday for a chance of their first major final in their first year at this level.

Mansfield have won all three of their encounters this season against Northumbria but will be taking nothing for granted as they are a dangerous team on their day.

Team Northumbria and Mansfield Giants go head-to-head on Saturday with a place in the Division Two playoff final at stake.

Playoff specialists Northumbria have reached the last three finals, winning the competition in 2007 and 2009, despite never finishing higher than fourth in the table. Meanwhile the Giants finished third in their debut season at this level, having gained promotion from Division Four in 2007 and Division Three last year.

Mansfield's assistant coach Steve Baxter is delighted with how his team have coped at the higher level:

"We are delighted to be in the semi-finals in our first year in Division Two," he exclaimed. "Overall we went 14-6 in what is a very tough league. I think it is somewhat testament to how good Division Three was last year in that the top five this year were all promoted to this league.

"It has not been the easiest of years for us in terms of injuries and we have had key players missing for numerous games. Luckily we managed to recruit some quality into the team and that has paid dividends when we have been shorthanded. We also managed to keep the core of last year's squad that finished runners up to Durham, only really losing Matt Shaw to Derby.

"Before the season started we wanted to not only make the playoffs but get home court advantage if possible.

"We managed to achieve that and if we had won one more game we would have finished second. There are now only four teams left who can be playoff champions and we are one of them.

"The fact that we have beaten Northumbria three times already this season will mean nothing come Saturday. They will be on a high after knocking out Brixton and we need to try and deflate that confidence early on.

"I honestly believe that when we have a full team playing we are as deep as any team in the league. There has not been one game this season where the whole team has played for one reason or another. This weekend will be our first, so we have some work to do on getting our rotations right as 10 players could be justified in playing 25 to 30 minutes."

Baxter is expecting Northumbria to pose a tough test for the Giants:

"In the three times we have played Northumbria the margins of victory have been smaller each game, so Saturday promises to be a close affair. None of the games have been blowouts and the games we won by 14 and 13 were close until the last five or so minutes.

"Last time out we struggled against their press a little but have worked on that in training and have improved of late. Whatever Greg Modzelweski does to get his team ready for the playoffs certainly works. Year on year they are constantly causing what some people label upsets, but it's obviously no coincidence.

"We had a big height advantage against them the last time we played yet they consistently came up with the offensive rebounds and we will need to do a better job on that this time round.

"Greg will know what are our strengths and weaknesses and will have made adjustments for these. We have to do the same likewise.

"In Chris Pearce they have one of the best players in the league. He is a consistent scorer and gets quite a few rebounds as well. A number of other players on the team play important roles for them. They might not all be high scorers but on their night any one of nine or ten guys can pop up and hurt you if your not careful. One of the other differences between Northumbria and some other teams in the league is they keep doing the things they do well, and do it as a team."

Baxter is determined that the Giants won't be taking anything for granted on Saturday:

"We will be making sure that there are no thoughts in the team of a final appearance in two weeks time. All of our efforts have to be focussed on Saturday. Amongst ourselves we feel we have the quality to win the playoffs, but I am sure Brixton did too and they got beat in the first round.

"That's the danger of complacency and not turning up to play night in night out. Nobody has the right to win, you have to go out and earn it. Most of our games have been high-scoring of late but Northumbria are a gritty, hard-nosed team who don't give up many easy points so I wouldn't predict the highest scoring of affairs."

Northumbria coach Greg Modzelewski admits that the 2009/10 season has presented his team with many challenges:

"With changes to the budget for recruitment, we were unable to fill the position vacated by key player Corey Diethorn and further strengthen the team with additional international calibre players. On a positive note, we provided the opportunity for Corey to receive his Master's degree and sign a professional contract to play in Spain this season.

"To fill the void of a player averaging 20 points, 15 rebounds, and 3 assists per match is challenging. Many of the players on the team have gained experience as role players while developing their individual and team game and working towards being a key player or contributor in their specified role. Role players support key players in many different ways."

Northumbria retained the services of the remaining core players from last season with the addition of seven incoming players.

Unaware of the basketball programme at Northumbria University, Nils Steuber arrived from Germany on the student exchange programme. Attending the trials by chance, the team signed the promising 6'7" German centre. After six weeks of settling into the basketball programme, he dominated the post with textbook post moves and made significant contributions, leading the team in rebounding and points during several winning streaks.

As the team was gaining chemistry and momentum, Steuber reluctantly left the team in December 2009 in order to pursue his academic requirements on the exchange programme. In his last league match, Steuber posted a double-double in points (24) and rebounds (16). Without his presence inside, the team was forced to make further adjustments in the middle of the season.

"The returning and incoming players have adjusted to losses of key players by working closely as a team to make necessary adjustments, firstly at the beginning of the season and then followed by Nils' departure in December," said Modzelewski. "For example, in last week's playoff match, five players scored in double figures. For most of the regular and Cup season, our top scorers have varied from match to match with several players scoring in double figures.

"Without the experience of key players who create scoring opportunities, we have been working endlessly towards a total team effort by continually emphasizing each player's role and trying to bring out the best of each one of these players.

"Initially the team was playing inconsistently and experienced tough losses. As the season has developed, the team has excelled in executing the offensive and defensive philosophies and have won some great matches including our victory in the playoff quarter-final.

"We've competed well all season and more importantly, developed team players to compete with confidence and peak at the right time.

"As a university we are focusing on the areas of emphasis as outlined by British Basketball to ensure the players execute the basic individual and team fundamentals, and therefore opening the door for other future opportunities in playing at higher levels."

Modzelewski is aware of the danger that the Giants pose:

"They are an experienced and mature team with players who have played at high levels in the UK and USA.

"Some of these players competed on the same team or teams for a few seasons. Their team chemistry is evident in their ability to consistently win matches culminating with a third place finish in a very competitive Division Two.

"Mansfield are playing well as a team and have signed several key players with no one player or players solely contributing to the overall success. Mathew Martin is comfortably and confidently competing in the 'zone' at the moment and is a player to watch."

Twenty-four Dan Watts points helped Giants to an 85-71 home victory against Northumbria when the teams met in the Patron's Cup, and Richards' side also recorded a pair of wins against them in the league.

When the teams met in December, Giants came out on top 84-71, after a strong second half. In the return, Giants won a tight game 88-83, and it was at the free throw line that they secured victory.

Team Northumbria beat Mansfield, advance to D2 playoff final

Playoff specialists Team Northumbria again upset the form-book to reach the Division Two title game with a 72-65 victory against Mansfield Giants on Saturday.

Northumbria had lost their three games against Giants this season, but led by Chris Pearce's 20 points they reached their fourth straight playoff final.

It was the home team who made the brighter start, jumping into an 8-4 lead on the back of some quick thinking as they looked to push the ball up court early to deny the Giants' defence chance to set up.

That lead was extended to seven points midway through the quarter, largely due to a host of missed shots from the Giants. The introduction of Paul Kelly into the game injected some life to the visitors and he helped narrow that gap down to 18-15 at the first break.

The Giants started the second period with much more intent, and whilst they still were not firing on all cylinders, some excellent defensive pressure meant that Northumbria could only manage two points in the first five minutes. Michal Ciesla was proving to be the main scoring threat for the Giants as he netted to move on to 10 points personal, closely followed by a Mathew Martin score to open up a 25-20 Mansfield lead.

Ian Berry and Welsh international Pearce then combined to score eight consecutive points for the home side as once more the lead shifted from one side to another.

Both teams were shooting horrendously from outside the arc and when Dylan Gomez connected with Northumbria's last basket of the first half it was remarkably the first trey from either side in the whole game. Dave Passmore slotted two free throws to wrap up the first half scoring as Northumbria went into the locker room 31-27 ahead.

Things looked much brighter for the visitors at the start of the second half as Mansfield finally started to play the game at their pace. Buoyed on by a vociferous travelling support a 15-2 run in the first four minutes of the period took them into what would be the biggest lead by either team on the night at 44-33.

Northumbria slowly chipped away at the lead but could get no closer than six points as the Giants closed out the quarter with a lead of 52-46. It looked a lot more positive for Mansfield at this point as they produced their best basketball of the game.

The final stanza saw a return to the scrappy ball that blighted the first half and gradually Northumbria ate into the slender Giants lead. Northumbria eventually managed to take the lead with just over two minutes remaining when veteran player-coach Greg Modzelewski found himself wide open in the corner to nail a trey, giving the home side a 61-60 lead.

Dan Watts was fouled attacking the basket on the next possession for the Giants and he kept his calm to put the visitors back up by one, but it would be their last lead of the game.

Pearce netted to give his side a one point lead going into the last minute as the tension rose with every possession. Mansfield turned the ball over on their next trip down the floor and Jamie Glen connected at the other end to put Northumbria up by three.

Once more the Giants executed poorly on offence and they compounded their error by fouling then next time down the floor. Glen kept his composure to hit both free throws and give his side a 5 point lead.

It was desperation time for Mansfield as they were rapidly running out of time to pull the gap back but some life was breathed back into them when Watts hit a quick 3 to narrow the margin to two. Again a quick foul ensued and again Glen converted giving a 4 point lead to Northumbria.

The Giants had no alternative to put up a quick three pointer to try and narrow the gap but they missed and for the third time in quick succession Glen was fouled and made both free throws. There were only seconds remaining when the Giants turned the ball over for the last time and Pearce scored a free throw for the last basket of the night to wrap up the win.

Watts (18.) and Ciesla (17.) were the only two Giants in double figures, with player-coach Dan Richards adding eight. Glen finished with 12 points for the hosts, with Toby Hutton chipping in with eight.

Niestety przegraliśmy rywalizację o 1 ligę... dla nas sezon się skończył z właśnie tą półfinałową porażką... Northumbria w finale przegrała z Durham 1 lub 2 punktami... Wielkie wyrazy szacunku dla tej drużyny gdyż w lidze drużyna z Newcastle zajeła 7 miejsce, do tego jeszcze na kolejkę przed końcem nie było pewne czy awansuje do fazy play off... Awanowali a play offach doszli aż do finału... Potwierdza to tylko fakt, że liga jest bardzo wyrównana...

Awans wywalczyły drużyny: Brixton i Durham... Smutne, że brakło nam jednego zwycięstwa w lidze z obojętnie jaką drużyną by awansować... A Brixton pokonaliśmy w lidze za każdym razem Sad

Odnośnie Mansfield Giants... to już od połowy czerwca zaczynamy przygotowania do nowego sezonu...
Czy będę grał w nowym sezonie? Jeszcze nie wiem... nie podjąłem decyzji, ostatnio wiele się wydażyło w moim życiu.. oczywiście pozytywnych rzeczy Smile

Z tego co wiem to praktycznie wszyscy zawodnicy zostają poza Matthew Martin który wraca do stanów gdzie bedzie grał w lidze uniwersyteckiej... życzę mu jak najlepiej bo chłopak ma perspektywy... klub już rozpoczął poszukiwania zawodnika na jego miejsce...
Nie wiadomo jeszcze co z Człowiekiem z Kongo... Cały czas boryka się z kontuzjami, niebawem będzie miał obywatelstwo angielskie więc dlatego także stanowi dobre wzmocnienie dla każdego klubu, gdyż zgłoszenie angielskiego zawodnika jest dużo tańsze niż europejczyka... najdrożej jest zapłacić za zawodników spoza kontynentu... Dlatego kwestie graczy zagranicznych jeszcze są otwarte..
